Unlike the hardware components which make up
the physical computer, software encompasses the operating system
itself (i.e. Windows 98 or Windows XP) and then the applications/
programs that are installed and run within that operating system.
Examples of those applications would be things such as Microsoft
Word, Internet Explorer, Mcafee VirusScan and even America Online.
Sometimes these program can have problems or not work at all. This
can sometimes be caused by two or more software programs that are
conflicting with one another, or the program being damaged by a
malicious program that got onto the computer such as a virus.
Sometimes software can go bad for no specific reason at all or just
have inherent problems left behind by their manufacturer. In some
cases, failure of hardware components such as memory or the hard
drive can cause software problems.
Generally though most problems with computers are software related
and rarely are related to the hardware, so just because your machine
is having an issue doesn't mean its old or broken and needs to be
